Craving some spy action? There are just 10 episodes in this third season of the U.K.'s popular and acclaimed espionage series MI-5 (known as Spooks in its country of origin), but there's more intrigue on hand than most TV action/dramas (or feature films, for that matter), and the sheer volume of extra features will definitely please devotees of this excellent program. If volume 3 is your introduction to MI-5, the opening episode, "Project Friendly Fire," is a solid crash course on the heights of suspense and plot twists the show undertakes on a regular basis: agent Tom Quinn (Matthew Macfayden from Pride and Prejudice) has disappeared after shooting his superior (Peter Firth), and his teammates must not only clear his name but save MI-5 itself from a government investigation. From there, MI-5 ratchets up the tension and action in each episode: the team tackles an extremist faction that has disrupted Middle East peace talks and now threatens British officials ("A Prayer for My Daughter"), a hacker bent on destroying Britain from the inside ("Outsiders"), and a kidnapping plot that forces new agent Adam (Rupert Penry-Jones) to make a terrible decision. In short, it's superior action-adventure television that certainly gives Stateside series like 24 a run for its money.

For series fans, volume 3 offers a staggering amount of supplemental features on the season, its performers, and the creative forces behind the show. Featurettes on the directors of each episode are included, as are interviews with cast members on their careers and characters, and series creator David Wolstencroft, who discusses the program with other writers from the program. Ten minutes of deleted scenes, a gallery of images from the season, and commentary on each episode (from producer Andrew Woodhead, director Johnny Campbell, executive producer Simon Crawford Collins, and cast member David Oyelowo, among others) round out the extras. Oh, and if you can't wait to find out what happens in season 4, there's five minutes of speculation from the cast and crew. And like all good spy stories, you'll just have to wait and see who's telling the truth. -- Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Great series.   January 18, 2008

I purchased this set for my husband who is a big fan of the MI-5 series. He said it was so good, he was afraid to watch the next series because he didn't want to be disappointed in comparison. Well, he watched volume 4 already and is looking forward to the next.

5 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT MI-5   January 6, 2008
azindn (Arizona, USA)
MI-5 follows a small team of intelligence career officers in Britain who must leave their personal lives at home to protect Queen and country. This is a taut, superior drama series which makes cop dramas from America seem flabby. Intelligently written and clearly designed to be addictive for those who like their tv uncensored and adult, the stories of MI-5 reflect today's current political dilemmas, terrorism, economic turmoil, and inter-agency competition. The "spooks" (the series original title in Britain) are human, lonely, and driven to try and have a life in spite of jobs that make it impossible. Each actor give strong performances that are serious ensemble cast award-worthy. Gritty stories, nerve racking deadlines, and villians who are truly nasty make MI-5 the best series not produced by HBO.

I have bought all British dvd sets of the Spooks series which have been screened on tv but edited for the US sensitivities on A&E. However, the adult subjects and gritty realism of the storylines means that these are far from family GP viewing. With Mathew MacFayden (Pride and Prejudice), Rupert Penry-Jones (Cambridge Spies), Peter Firth (Clarissa), and various guest actors from the pantheon of the British acting schools, this series does improve with every viewing as more and more details become obvious. Sometimes alittle too gadget oriented with the extras on the dvd set, the production values are high and there is nothing to really detract or critique. This is simply one of the most addictive series ever.

To be a CUTE actor is not enough! Matthew MacFadyen is HOT! Bring Matthew back! Please!
I have already sold the third series of Spooks and are not buying the rest.
The first two series will always be in my DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars MI-5 is Addictive   August 23, 2007

BBC continues to provide intelligent programming -- Can't say much about the MI-5 without spoiling it -- I would urge everyone to start with Series 1 -- if you enjoy that you won't be disappointed with Vol 2, 3 or 4. Cheers!
