The violent five-part adventure Afro Samurai marks both the increasing confluence of American and Japanese pop culture and the shift in Japanese depictions of African-Americans. The popularity of hip-hop in Japan has led to more positive images of blacks, including Takashi Okazaki's original manga. The "Director's Cut" contains an additional 15 minutes of footage, and is even gorier than the broadcast version on Spike TV. As a boy, Afro Samurai saw his father beheaded by the maniacal Justice. The murderer sought an ancient headband that marks the wearer as the #1 warrior in the world. As an adult, Afro seeks only revenge, cutting down anyone who blocks his path to Justice. Afro Samurai depicts a oddly anachronistic world that infuses cell phones, cigarette lighters, and cyber technology into traditional Japanese culture. The elongated character designs recall Peter Chung's Aeon Flux, and much of the series is rendered in moody grays, accented by gobbets of scarlet blood. Afro is such a taciturn figure, most of the dialogue goes to his motor-mouth comrade Ninja Ninja. This big budget production features an eclectic score by Wu-Tang Clan co-founder RZA and an A-list vocal cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Perlman. But for all its elaborate production values and over-the-top fights, Afro Samurai suffers from a weakness at its core: Afro is so monosyllabic and cold-blooded, he's not very interesting. His inevitable duel-to-the-death with Justice lacks the emotional punch of Spike's face-off against Vicious in Cowboy Bebop or Kenshin's one-on-one with Shishio in Rurouni Kenshin. This extremely violent series is not for the faint of stomach. (Rated TV MA, suitable for ages 17 and older: graphic violence, profanity, sexual activity, grotesque imagery, nudity, risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars good stuff!   November 17, 2008
Raymond Jones (GA)
loved the contrasting style between his conscience & his fighting style.
worked well & broke the storyline enough to kep it from becoming mundane blood & killing but not too much to distract from the plot.
thanks afro!

5 out of 5 stars THE SAMURAI IS AWESOME!!!!!!!   November 12, 2008
Juan Rodriguez
Getting the Afro Samurai on Blu Ray is a good way to see how the saga begins before the story begins again early in 2009. Those who are big on action that is visually stunning and a story that keeps you wanting more will really enjoy this disc.

5 out of 5 stars YO JUBEI! THERES A NEW HARDCORE SAMURAI IN TOWN!!!   October 31, 2008
Michael Byrd (Brooklyn, NY)
Asolutely off the chain animation given to this disc Yo! Finally we have a full feature representation of Black Japanamation in the game to show how much the brothers have loved and appreciated this raw genre. The detail is crisp, the story so Sergio Leone style(A+++)and the characters are very interesting except for Afro's annoying alter ego who follows him everywhere. He has no purpose at all and they could have left him out with his corny humor. I do agree they could have given his character(Afro) more appeal and not be such a loner but it doesn't kill the flick at all. I am looking forward to season 2 and hope this time around they have more episodes than the first(5 only). I really have been impressed with Japan's interest in Black anime as of late(The Boondocks etc)and hope this continues as I am tired of seeing the same caucasian style characters male and female to tell stories that are so much more universal than what has been shown for so many years. The RZA's soundtrack is beautiful especially when he is fighting his robot self in the sky!! I love that part!!More, More,More!! Thanks and keep it hard guys!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great picture and Sound- Anime must own   October 8, 2008
AnimeGod981 (B!zarro W()rld)
This series presents great animation, with a heavy and grity sound track. The story line is a bit slow but over all it is great item to own. Jacksons Character of an antagionizer heavily reminded me of the Clown in Spawn on HBO.

A bit pricy for so few episodes however.

5 out of 5 stars Good series, perfect DVD   October 4, 2008
Patrik Wolters (Hannover)
This Boxset is very well designed. The package is so great. It looks and feels great. Very good, especially for the fair price. I can only recommend it.

About the series I have to say: If you like animes, martial arts, Wu-Tang, The RZA, Samuel L. Jackson or/and "lightweight entertainment" this is a must buy/see!!
