Amazon.com The tale of the girl who tried to become the prince of her dreams comes to a baroque finale, after the schemes of the Student Council and the plot involving the Black Rose have fizzled. As Utena's nascent romance with Anthy's brother Akio devolves into a stylized battle, the revelations, betrayals, and romances are kept deliberately vague, allowing the viewer to decide the nature of the relationships between Utena and Anthy, Anthy and Akio, Akio and Utena. The drawn animation becomes increasingly static as the CG effects grow more elaborate: director Kunihiko Ikuhara fills the screen flying swords, crumbling masonry, carousels, sports cars, tears, and Charles Rennie MacIntosh-style roses. Fans of this epicene melodrama will enjoy the overwrought but inconclusive climax; more skeptical viewers will find it long on pretense and short on substance. (Not rated: suitable for ages 14 and older: violence, brief nudity, suggestions of homosexuality and incest) --Charles Solomon
Description Everything has been leading up to this! Utena fights the most difficult battle of her life as her friend's freedom hangs in the balance. Filled with betrayal and secrets, this final volume is the culmination of the Utena story! Contains episodes 37-39.

The Ending of Utena November 13, 2004 Katy North (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wow. Just... wow... This ending proves that Utena is NOT just a slightly messed up Shojou melodrama... If you can't handle extreme disillusionment and cynicism, however, shut your eyes tight and don't watch this ending...
Utena! Utena! Utena? December 22, 2003 Julia Precourt (Shelburne, Vt. United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
It's The END! the long awaited finale of Utena. I personally found these last three episodes outstanding, clearing up most of my questions from the show. But don't expect a clear and obvious awnser, it will take some thought, reviewing of episodes #9, #12, #13 and the end of the black rose saga. But it's worth it, and thats what Utena makes you do, think! To others this ending will be a major let down, leaving you wondering why, how, and what the f***! But to those I recommend, just thinking back through out the show, pay attention to little details, and remeber, not everything has a meaning, some of the things in that show are just in it for the sake of being in it.All and all a great ending to a great show!
The Revolution is here! November 13, 2003 End of the World (USA) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Finally, after the long wait, Utena Finale is here. I know I've been waiting a long time to see it, as well as thousands of other Utena fans. This DVD is awesome, and a must have for any Utena fan who is dying to know what happens at the end.I loved this DVD because it was consistant with the others, had a good ending and just made me love Utena all that much more. The artwork and music were incredible as always (The final duel music was soooooo cool), but it was really the plot that shone through this time. Finale ties up all the loose ends about the duels, the rose bride, princes and princesses, and the revolution. It brings together the symbols and mysteries that have left us guessing until the very end. Besides a great ending, the Finale DVD also has some...special features, and some drool-worthy scenes of Touga and Saionji. I won't give the ending away, but I will tell you that there IS a revolution. If you really love and truly understand Utena, you can understand the ending that much more. One last clue to help you understand the ending; think of Ohtori academy as it's own world. There is the real world, and then there is Ohtori world. They are two very separate places. Remember that. (Anyone who has seen the movie probably caught on to that! See the movie too! It's a beautiful, artistic, re-telling of Utena.) If you love Utena you definately must watch this DVD! You'll never find out about "End of the World" if you don't. ^_^ ---For the revolution of the world!
