Conceived as an "online miniseries event" during the 2008 writers' strike, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a 42-minute musical romp that bears the distinctive stamp of Joss Whedon. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) plays the title character, who video-blogs about his twin goals to join the Evil League of Evil and to woo the fair Penny (Felicia Day, of Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Web series The Guild), a woman he met at the local laundromat. Dr. Horrible is foiled on both fronts, however, by his arch-nemesis, the self-absorbed superhero Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion, Whedon's Firefly).

Dr. Horrible was written by Whedon, his brothers Zack and Jed, and Jed's fiancee Maurissa Tancharoen, and the songs were written by Joss and Jed (who also produced, orchestrated, played, etc.) with some lyrics by Tancharoen. (Jed and Tancharoen have backup singing roles.) The offbeat, off-the-cuff humor is laugh-out-loud funny, and just like Dr. Horrible wants to take over the world, the songs will take over your head: they're engaging ("My Freeze Ray'), stirring ("My Eyes"), and sweet ("Penny's Song'). "So They Say" is particularly evocative of Jonathan Larson's Rent, but as with Joss Whedon's musical episode of Buffy, "Once More with Feeling," the influences are diverse. It's hard to imagine a better cast. Harris, who's sung Sondheim on Broadway, is a great lead and clearly the best singer, Day is completely charming, and who better than Captain Tightpants to play the pompous superhero? One could argue about the ending, and the independent budget shows, but Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a complete hoot for people who enjoy musicals with quirky humor. Plan on watching it multiple times. --David Horiuchi

On the DVD
If you've already watched or downloaded Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, a number of bonus features might entice you. There are two commentary tracks: Harris, the three Whedons, Tancharoen, Day, and Fillion recorded a spirited track discussing the movie, and there's also "Commentary! The Musical" in which they ignore the movie and sing about the writers' strike and each other (e.g., Fillion sings "I'm Better than Neil")--the songs aren't as good as the Horrible songs, but it's good silly fun. A 20-minute making-of discusses the cast, the recording sessions, and how the movie became a phenomenon, and 10 videos (a half-hour total) were recorded by fans who want to join the Evil League of Evil. And when's the last time you wanted to pause the FBI warning? --David Horiuchi

Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) stars as Billy, A.K.A. Dr. Horrible, a budding super-villain whose plans for world domination continually go awry. His two goals: getting accepted into the Evil League of Evil, and working up the guts to speak to his laundromat crush Penny, played by Felicia Day (The Guild). The only thing standing in his way is Captain Hammer, Billy's superhero arch-nemesis played by Nathan Fillion (Firefly). With one big score, Billy could get into the E.L.E. and earn the respect of Penny, but only if he can keep her away from the dashing Captain Hammer...

For all Joss Whedon fans and the masses beyond who like FUN, this is for you! Joss hits a home run again with his musical expertise, just like Once More With Feeling, and delivers 40 minutes of catchy songs & hilarity! I had no idea Neil Patrick Harris could sing... I swoon! And Nathan Fillion is simply brilliant. Get this for you, your friends, your mom... they'll thank you for it.

5 out of 5 stars Neil Patrick Harris is a genius!!!   January 9, 2009

Exceptional dialog, music, humor, pathos...yes, one of those again! Whedon and crew are reshaping "television" into the 21st Century and hopefully will carry the "industry" along with them in their wake (I know...I'm mixing metaphors but what the hell!). I can't wait for the next episode (I pray one will follow)!

Each of the main actors brings with them a unique "graphic novel" ambiance to the three-part episode. Nathan Fillion delivers just the right balance of likability and swarminess. Neil Patrick Harris brings an exquisite mix of illusion and reality - enough that we can touch his human side (and connect with it), while still laughing along with his illusory attempts at superhero-ness. And Felecia Day provides a perfect target of the two male leads' affections. The songwriting is catchy and endearing and the songs delivered with clarity and feeling.

For the past three days I have found myself unintentionally singing lines from the show as I drive, shop for groceries, shower, walk the dogs, cook dinner . . . you name it! They are that catchy!

You won't regret downloading and sitting through the 40 minutes of exceptional film-making!

5 out of 5 stars yes!   January 8, 2009

It's really good, satisfyingly good, reminds you what story telling and tv and movies are supposed to be like. While making you laugh. While making you feel. While being silly and fun and great and cool and ridiculous and emotionally real despite being totally unreal =)

The music is really good, well written, well scored, catchy, covering a lot of styles and sung well (who knew Neil Patrick Harris could sing?) the acting is really good - the characters are deliberately a bit cheesy but the acting itself is smooth and seamless - it's effortless to become part of the world and suspend disbelief, and enjoyable to do so =)

The humor is original and often wonderfully subtle and layered (which is a great combination with the over the top situations and subject material) - support roles were rare but well done.

All in all - what a wonderful gift to us - thanks to all involved with it! It was truly appreciated and I really look forward to the next project =)

Best modern day musical. It's no wonder coming from Josh Whedon, but it amazing how well done the mesh of new actors, new styles, and new technologies; with a older genre.

5 out of 5 stars Deliciously Evil   January 7, 2009

Joss Whedon has created another wonderful hit. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog has just the right amount of evil mixed with just a touch of cheesiness. It's really hard to decide which is more enjoyable. Watching Dr. Horrible, or watching it while listening to Commentary the Musical.

Neil Patrick Harris does a fantastic job as the main character Dr. Evil. He's trying to get into the Evil League of Evil, headed up by Bad Horse. While creating a video blog about it, we find out that he's got a crush on a beautiful girl from the laundry mat Penny, played by Felicia Day from The Guild. We also learn that his arch-nemesis is Capt. Hammer, played by Nathan Fillion from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly.

If you watched it for free over the internet, or purchased the episodes from iTunes, I would still recommend buying the DVD. It not only includes all three acts, it also has a special commentary track called Commentary the Musical. It's just what it says it is. A commentary track that's a musical in its own right. That alone is worth the price of the DVD.
