Call it Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The College Years or Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Boys, but the horror series Supernatural delivers some of the most satisfying small-screen scares in recent memory. The premise is deceptively simple: brothers Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki from Gilmore Girls and Jensen Ackles, both appealing) travel the darker corners of the American landscape in search of their father, who's gone missing while hunting the malevolent forces that lead to the death of their mother. In the course of their search, the siblings encounter a host of otherworldly creatures, including vampires, ghosts, and witches, as well as such distinctly American phenomena as the urban-legend favorite the Hook ("Hookman"), monsters from Native American mythology ("Wendigo"), and fearful figures from children's games ("Bloody Mary"). Supernatural's integration of elements from American pop culture and folklore, combined with its skilled cast and crew (creator/co-writer Erik Kripke delivered 2005's Boogeyman, while director/executive producer David Nutter is a veteran of The X-Files and Millennium), and better-than-average attempts at atmosphere and suspense place the series well above the other spookshow programs that arrived on networks at about the same time (Invasion, Night Stalker), and should hold considerable appeal for fans of frightful fare.

The six-disc set contains all 22 episodes of the debut season, with commentary by Ackles and Padalecki on "Phantom Traveler" and Nutter, Kripke, and producer Peter Johnson on the pilot episode; two making-of documentaries (one on the show itself, and the other on its stars), as well as a brace of unaired scenes and a gag reel round out the set. For those with DVD-ROM capabilities, the set also includes a link to a web site which offers a sneak preview at season 2 and the pilot script, among other bonus features. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Great Deal   January 8, 2009
Andrew Baez (Orange, CA USA)
This was a great deal! Just like how it would have been if I bought this item at a store, but less expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing show!   January 5, 2009

I was really excited to find these movies on Amazon, especially for such a great price. I love the show and I wanted to have every episode in one neat package.
Amazon makes everything so easy to order.
I can't wait to sit back in the dark, fire blazing on the hearth, the wind whipping the trees around and my old house making odd noises and watching it one show after the other!

5 out of 5 stars An addictive entertaining show   January 4, 2009
Arthur Bradley (Virginia)
Supernatural tells the story of two brothers (Dean and Sam) who experienced the loss of their mother at the hands of a malevolent spirit who likes to tack his victims to the ceiling before engulfing them in flames!

The show could loosely be classified as supernatural horror. Some of the shows are more fun, and others are quite spooky. The brothers each bring a different appeal (Dean being the bad boy loner, and Sam being the clean college driven by revenge). Both actors (Jensen Ackles, Jared Padelecki) are outstanding, working well off each other and the clever scripts.

Each episode is an introduction to some new evil (from dopplegangers to ghosts to anything else you can find in a dusty text on creature lore). Besides making the world a better place, the brothers are also seeking revenge for both their mother and a girlfriend (ah, poor Jess). The closest thing I have seen on TV to Supernatural was the original Kolchak: The Night Stalker series way back in 1974.

If you're looking for a fun and sometimes spooky show starring two excellent young actors, pick up the Supernatural series. Highly recommended!

Written by Arthur Bradley, author of "Process of Elimination" - a thriller that pits a martial artist against a world-class sniper out to shape the presidential election.

5 out of 5 stars I watched this in one weekend!!!   December 28, 2008

Great Series - This collection is well done and includes lots of extras and behind the scenes. All the seasons are good but the first one is essential!! You really discover the basis of the main characters and how they came to be the Dean and Sam of the currect episodes. I just became a fan recently and was so glad I went back and bought the seasons to catch up.

5 out of 5 stars Boy was I wrong about this show..   December 7, 2008

I admit it, I only got into this show because it was on right after Smallville. I knew Jensen Ackles from his one season on Smallville, and honestly I wasn't that into his role as Jason on that show. I thought the idea for two ghostbusting brothers sounded kind of dumb, but I watched the premier anyway, and I have been hooked ever since. Dean's smart-a$$ mouth, the Impala, and the excellent plots keep things lively. They come up with some very imaginative and clever plots, not just hunting down and killing another ghost each week. This show can be really unpredictable; just when you think you know what's about to happen, it goes in a totally different direction. I feel this show is one of the most underrated and unfairly neglected shows on tv. It has some very intelligent writing and plots, it can scare you at times, and make you laugh as well.
