4 out of 5 stars The Admiral Fallon segment   July 31, 2008

Admiral Fallon speaks about his career in the Navy, his years of being a Navy pilot, his various commands. He shows great respect and loyalty to the people he has served with. He has had a long and distinguished military career. Charlie Rose asks him about his over- all strategic vision , and he speaks about the problems of Iraq and Afghanistan. He is an advocate of dialogue with one's adversaries, and says we should dialogue with China and also with Iran. And this though he recognizes that Iran's regime is a special problem, and that there are 'bad guys' out there. He does not however present any immediate tactical idea as to how to deal specifically with any particular threat, including the Iranian nuclear one.
At a certain point one feels he is speaking very deliberately and cautiously. Charlie Rose wishes him at the end 'continued service of his country' so it may well be that he has some kind of political future in mind. This is not at all however clear.
In this conversation we get the sense of a decent and responsible soldier who has served his country long and well. But we do not get a real clue as to how America will contend with the variety of military and strategic threats facing it.
